Fix Bad Audio: Noise Removal, Loudness & Audio Repair on Apple Devices

Most bad audio is not unusable audio. A remote interview with a fridge humming behind it, a voice memo recorded too hot, a lecture captured across a room — these are specific, diagnosable faults, and most of them have a fix that takes minutes rather than a re-record.

Diagnosing What Is Actually Wrong
Hiss, mains hum, rumble, sibilance and clipping all sound like “bad audio” but need completely different treatment. Identifying the fault first is what separates a clean repair from a file that ends up sounding worse than the original.
Noise, Hum and Buzz Removal
Broadband noise reduction handles hiss and room tone; 50 Hz and 60 Hz hum from mains electricity is a narrowband problem with a narrowband solution. Applying the wrong one leaves the noise in and takes the voice out with it.
Repairing Clipping and Distortion
Clipping cannot be undone — the peaks were never recorded. But mild cases reconstruct well enough to be inaudible, and knowing where the line falls tells you in two minutes whether a recording is salvageable or needs to be re-shot.
LUFS and Loudness Normalization
Podcast platforms expect around -16 LUFS for stereo, and a file that ignores that gets turned down, turned up, or simply sounds amateur next to everything else in the feed. Loudness is measured, not eyeballed on a waveform.
Formats and Where Processing Happens
WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, MP3 and M4A each make a different trade between size, quality and compatibility. And with sensitive recordings — interviews, medical appointments, legal notes — whether processing happens on your device or on someone’s server is a substantive question, not a technicality.
